If the outlet shorts out for any reason, it will still trip for safety, even without ground. And, if your goal is to pass an inspection , an electrical tester will cause it to trip. Installing a GFCI is an acceptable alternative to the dangerous and illegal practice of a bootleg ground. This one needs a sticker. GFCI outlets come with a supply of them. Safety first Safety first: Turn off the power at the breaker box. Plug a light or better yet, a television or radio into the outlet, turn the power on, then flip breakers until the light or sound stops. If you use a light, you may need a helper. It could preclude instances of getting shocked if touching something energized a hotplate and a device already installed in the home the stove, range hood etc..
Adding a ground rod would help. Also don’t run any high end appliances while on generator unless you keep a close eye on the fuel level. When the generator runs out of fuel, it dosen’t just stop, it runs down. While it is doing this it will decrease the amount of voltage to the house. I have an almost exact setup to yours with a pair of load meters added and, except for the above mentioned step-order change, virtually identical startup procedures. One thing I discovered during my research on this method was the vague definitions and codes regarding portable generator grounding. Several authoritative sources have said to paraphrase:

But since you are looking to use GFCI many jurisdictions aren’t going to require an equipment ground at all. In the USA, that very rarely is acceptable any more. As of about or so??? They now want a full isolated ground wire almost all the time, even between buildings on the same place. One can find a farm exception, but it’s not prefered any more and many local inspectors won’t allow it.
Just saying, the rules have changed in many locations if one is worried about resale or insureance coverage, etc. Good advice otherwise tho. I had the whole farm service wires redone in or 8 right before the new rules took effect, saved some money by going with the old rules, smart of me right? Now I added a building last year, and it was very difficult to get it wired up, there was a lot of talk of needing to run a new set of 4 wires from the main transformer feet away, instead of just adding on to the 3 wire box on a building feet away.
And we are talking wires that are well beyond using the gauge numbering system, the metal is about as thick as a thumb in each of the 3 or 4 wires. So my ‘savings’ back then almost cost me a bundle last year, but it eventually was ok to go with the cheaper route. So anyhow, my advise on wiring tends to point out the better options for future needs, I don’t mean to spend other people’s money needlessly.

Here I am addressing only the common corrections or recommendations that home inspectors call for in regard to the proper connection, GFI-protection, and functionality of plug-in receptacles in homes.

For instance, if something at the bathroom outlet tripped a GFCI, it might trip the device that had been added right there as an “upgrade,” or else it might trip the original one in the garage — whichever one happened to respond more quickly. If you don’t know the complication, you won’t be looking in the right place to restore power.
Besides having to hook a GFI up correctly, anytime you introduce GFI protection onto existing wiring and existing loads, you may find unexpected tripping. Although this could be detecting a shock hazard you weren’t aware of before, there are also a few wiring conditions from the past that are not GFCI friendly. One unintentional condition would be where a ground wire is contacting the neutral side of a receptacle.
Some intentional conditions would include places where the neutrals of two circuits are unnecessarily and improperly combined in a multi-gang box, or where the neutral for lights of a GFCI-protected 3-way switch system is introduced from somewhere ahead of the GFI you put in. Yet it is possible to retrofit a new three-prong or GFCI receptacle into the same outlet box without any rewiring, as long as the box itself is grounded. Luckily, metal boxes attached to armored, or BX, cable—a type of wiring commonly found in old houses—generally are grounded; the cable’s flexible metal jacket serves the same purpose as a dedicated ground wire. To switch out your receptacles, just follow the steps. Insert one prong of a circuit tester into the receptacle’s hot slot the shorter one , and touch the other to a screw that secures the cover plate.

After all, they both go to ground eventually. This would mean that your surge protector that needs ground to operate correctly would work surge protectors simply dump surges to ground before they hit your equipment. Want to guess what it is? If you touched the case, you could be electrocuted. You see, the metal case on 3-prong devices is always connected to the ground prong, mainly because if there were a problem in the device and the case somehow became live, that power would have a clean path to ground and would hopefully blow a circuit breaker before any harm could be done.
Since you connected the neutral prong directly to the ground prong, the case itself now has the potential to carry the return current.
